Jung’s Discovery of the Cure for Patriarchy: for a World Out of Balance  “Satya is Director of The Salome Institute of Jungian Studies in Portland, Oregon, USA, a psychotherapist in private practice, and is the author of a book forthcoming from Random House in Spring 2020.

Before Jung’s work was about the Shadow and the Self, it was about Salome: the young, Jewish woman, the sensual dancer, who requested the head of John the Baptist from the transfixed and obedient King Herod. Jung met this disheveled, discarded woman in the depths of his own psyche and withdrew in horror. “Let me be,” he tells her when they first meet, “I dread you, you beast.” And yet, Jung had embarked on this journey into the depths of his psyche in order to pay attention to what arose. Over many nights of his descent (and his many years of exploring these early visions), Jung came to acknowledge Salome’s divine power. He experienced Her divinity within his own body. In the face of his fear, he strained to witness her presence and power. She then transforms, as he does, and Jung comes to love her. He discovered that She is him. She is that which brings him life and joy, the capacity to feel, to create art, to deeply connect, and to trust—“[she] takes hold of me, She is my own soul." (Jung, Red Book, 2012 pp175-85)

'Fairy Tales: The Role of the Symbolic in Working with Trauma’   https://www.symboliclife.co.uk

FAIRY TALE SUKI.png
Suki.jpg
Fairy tales, to my mind, are rather like collective dreamscapes.  We will explore fairy tales and get a sense of how their underlying universal symbolic truth speaks to us today. We can reflect together on how the story resonates with our own internal world, taking the focus gradually outwards to see if we can discern a relevance for our society today.  In the depths of our psyches we all share in different ways with this universal symbolic reality,

15th March 2019 Emotional Expression through Creativity

Sarah Freed image.png

“Who am I?”, “What do I want?” Important questions that often bring people to the therapy room. But how often do we ask ourselves the question; “how do I express myself emotionally?” If only more of us were curious about the connection and/or disconnection between our identity and emotional health.

Sarah Freed is a counsellor, psychotherapist, couples therapist and creative arts therapist working in private practice near Cambridge. She is a poet, writer, mother, wife and daughter.

In this workshop, Sarah will share her poetry which attempts to capture her experience of the human condition and observations of life through the lens of feelings. Jungian symbolism and awakening, transpersonal experiences - elements of the psychosynthesis approach – are apparent within Sarah’s poetry.

Sarah hopes to provide an opportunity to explore emotional expression and how creativity can open up a doorway to the Self, our core, the fundamental part of who we are.

Sarah is the author of Mending the Soul, A Journey Beyond Abuse, Lulu Publishing, 2017.

Sarah captures within her poetry the essence of a damaged soul on its journey to repair and transformation, within a framework of Jungian symbolism. She depicts the corrosive impact of abuse and the regeneration of the soul through the development of self-compassion and healing.

In her new book, Finding your Voice, Emotional Expression through Creativity, Lulu Publishing, 2018, Sarah combines her roles as poet and psychotherapist, to show the benefits of using creativity as a means for emotional expression.

26th April 2019 Bells of Eternity:  An exploration of the life and music of Arvo Pärt (b.1935)

Arvo Pärt.png
The early, dissonant music of the  Estonian composer Arvo Pärt reflected many Western European avante-garde orthodoxies of the 1950s and 60s. However, after a 9 year silence, Pärt’s mature compositional voice emerged in music characterised by austere purity,  simplicity, and above all,  a mysticism so profound as to be tangible. This music seems to issue directly from the Self, imparting an unshakeable sense of spiritual calm to a world which, although desacrelised, still  hungers and thirsts for the divine.

18th January 2019 - The Alchemy of the Mosque

masjed-e-imam.jpg
The 14th Century Sufi, Najm al-Din Kubra wrote "Our method is a method of alchemy. It is a question of drawing out the subtle organism of light, for over it is the mountain under which man is prisoner."

This Plenary will give us an opportunity to discover the Sufic influences in the design and construction of the Iranian Mosque and understand how the Realisation of these can affect the visitor and can invoke a sense of the numinous. It will do this by approaching them from a Jungian Perspective and show how the transformation of the clay from which they are made may also be mirrored in the view of the visitor.

22nd February 2019 The Dolphin, Spirit of the Fertile Sea

People have been fascinated from ancient times, and across many cultures, by the playful and curious dolphin, a creature who seems to want to interact with humans and other animals. It has always been regarded as an animal with almost human-like intelligence and has been known to provide assistance to humans in their direst need. In examining a folktale from the Mediterranean, we can gain some insight into the psychological reality the dolphin represents. As an emissary of the spirit of the depths it plumbs the dark places of the unconscious and helps to bring about a creative renewal when life has become sterile and unproductive.

17th May 2019  -  SoulCollage® - As a Marriage of Jungian Active Imagination and Personal Divination

Jane Earle, Jungian-Oriented Psychotherapist

MA, MBACP, UKCP, (NRHP)

SOUL.COLLAGE CROP.JPG

Quaker Meeting House

HARTINGTON GROVE

CB1 7UB

 7pm for 7.30pm start

This evening will involve both a Talk as well as a mini workshop on Divination Cards.  SoulCollage® is a process created by Seena Frost, an American psychotherapist.  It has its roots in Jungian theory and psychotherapy as well as Virginia Satir’s “parts therapy,” Fritz Perls’ Gestalt Therapy, Humanistic Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology, Narrative Therapy, and Psychosynthesis.  However, it is not a therapy! It is a simple process created to facilitate self-exploration and a means for divining the inner wisdom of what Jung refers to as the Self. It is designed for everyone to use and share in groups and community.  Although it is not therapy, it can be immensely therapeutic and an enriching intervention for therapists to use in therapy sessions.

I will give an overview of the process, its use of Jung’s active imagination and its relationship with the archetypes and the collective unconscious as well as the personal unconscious.

Then we will use the process and make a card each to explore for ourselves.  Provided will be enough materials for everyone to make a Divination Card in the session as well. Please bring a notebook and pen to record your thoughts and discoveries.  When you leave you will have learned enough to begin making cards and the foundation of your personal divination SoulCollage® deck.

Quaker Meeting House in

Hartington Grove, CB1 7UB

 7pm for 7.30pm start

This talk will consider the unconscious patterns which run through families and generations of families, as one generation inherits, responds and reacts to the complexes and archetypal energies of the previous generation – and even of the generation before that – parents, grandparents and in some cases, great-grandparents. Melanie Rein will draw on the symbolic nature of the genogram, or psychological genealogy tree, exploring its connection to the Tree of Life and its value as a visual image for eliciting, revealing and deepening insights into family and ancestral patterning.

Melanie Rein (PhD) is a training analyst and accredited supervisor with the Guild of Analytical Psychologists (G.A.P.) and a member of the Independent Group of Analytical Psychologists (IGAP).

The ancient Biblical story of the Garden of Eden became part of the background mythology of Christianity, Judaism and Islam and its themes are woven too into the consciousness of contemporary secularism.  But what can this story say to us today? This evening's talk will dramatize the story from the viewpoints of the four 'characters' who appear in the text - Adam, Eve, the serpent, God - as a way of illuminating some of the themes and motifs of this protean myth.

Rabbi Howard Cooper is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice, and writer, the Director of Spiritual Development at Finchley Reform Synagogue, London.
