The Lost Self in a Culture of Appearances
The “as-if” personality- sometimes experienced as the imposter self- lives between mirror and mask, presenting a carefully crafted image while concealing a more fragile inner reality. Behind the polished persona, the individual may retreat into fantasy, illusion, and imagined worlds, becoming increasingly disconnected from authentic experience.
From a Jungian perspective, this dynamic can profoundly affect one's relationship with both self and others, creating difficulties with intimacy, presence, and a genuine sense of belonging. Themes explored include body image, sexual addiction, aging, split identities, the influence of parental relationships, and the powerful impact of social media on contemporary life. In a culture increasingly shaped by appearances, where the boundaries between reality and illusion are often blurred, these challenges have become ever more relevant.
